Dr. Michael Haynie was named Syracuse University's 13th Chancellor Tuesday, Mar 3.

Syracuse University selects Michael Haynie as its next Chancellor. Haynie will take over for Chancellor Kent Sevyrud, who served in the post for 12 years.

Haynie’s appointment is a promotion from within, as the current Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation will now lead the university of 22,500 students and 5900 staff and faculty.

Haynie is considered a top national expert in innovation and entrepreneurship. He was also instrumental in growing SU’s extensive programming and support for veterans. That includes the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, as well as the creation and construction of the National Veterans Resource Center.

Syverud announced his retirement, effective in June 2026, back in August of 2025. He will immediately take over as the 16th President of the University of Michigan, effective July 1, 2026.

Haynie takes over SU amid financial challenges brought on by the changing landscape of college students, as well as barriers to international students that have cost SU enrollment and tuition dollars.

Haynie becomes the 13th Chancellor and President of Syracuse University.
