Climate change brings concern and opportunity for NYS wine grape growers

WAER's environmental podcast Deeper Shade of Green with Dr. Chris Bolt

Grape growers in New York State's extensive wine industry face a threat form the changing climate. Grape vines can get the wrong signals from warming winters and roller coaster temperatures in spring that cause damage and potentially slash their yields. But longer growing seasons in fall could actually pay dividend for the quality and taste of some wines.

On this Deeper Shade of Green, Jason Londo, Associate Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell University, shares his research on just what wine growers can do in the ace of climate change. He's helping identify strains of grapes that might be more resilient, along with ways to minimize damage to crops that might bloom, then freeze with increasingly unpredictable weather.

Music for episode 10 of Deeper Shade of Green comes from the Syracuse-based Jazz group E.S.P., the song is Reach.
