The impacts & effectiveness of the City of Syracuse's climate initiative

WAER's environmental podcast Deeper Shade of Green with Dr. Chris Bolt

The City of Syracuse changed streetlights and stop signals to LEDs; they bought hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles; they optimized trash truck and bus routes; the even planted a bunch of trees. The Sustainable Syracuse Initiative has a goal of making a difference on climate change, while also taking what Mayor Ben Walsh calls common sense steps to save money.

On this episode of Deeper Shade of Green, Walsh explains the goals of Sustainable Syracuse, as well as progress already made on emissions reductions. He shares plans to get residents more involved to further the progress and set an example. Dereth Glance, Regional Director for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, discusses the impacts it can have, as well as how the initiative fits in with state plans to mitigate climate change.
