New York has one of the strongest climate protection laws in the country, the CLCPA. It calls for emissions reductions, conversions in buildings and energy production to eliminate fossil fuels. But concern over many of those investments has caused state leaders - including Governor Kathy Hochul who was once a champion of the law - to roll back many of the goals. Advocates, including some of the architects of the law and its implementation plan, are defending it.
On this episode of Deeper Shade of Green, Alex Beauchamp of Food and Water Watch, Cornell Climate Scientist Doctor Bob Howarth and Raya Salter with the Environmental Justice Law and Policy Center share their urgent concerns for why the law and its provisions should not be delayed. They make the scientific case for why it's imperative to act on climate saving technologies, as well as a long-term economic case.
NOTE: Since production of this episode, state leaders negotiated a budget that included delays on some of the CLCPA goals and emissions-reduction targets.
