#7 Syracuse Silences Stony Brook 17-9 Behind Freshman Phenom Owen Hiltz
There were no fans this time around for the Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse game. Nevertheless, SU handled business on Friday, downing Stony Brook 17-9.
Friday marked the first-ever matchup between Syracuse and Stony Brook. And the Orange couldn’t be any more dominant to open the all-time series between the two squads.
In an offense that centered around Griffin Cook a year ago, this time there’s a young star stepping into the role: freshman Owen Hiltz. The Canadian had a game-high four-goals en route to SU’s dominant win over the seawolves.
Hiltz’s quick draw ability is what separated him in this one. As soon as Hiltz touched the ball, it was in a flash it would reach the back of the net. The freshman had five shots on goal the entire game, converting at an 80 percent clip. Head Coach John Desko says Hiltz’s offense output is not the only thing improving week-to-week.
“He’s even reached a point where he’s starting to tell some of the other players where they’re supposed to be within the offense,” said Desko. “He probably could have had a couple more.”
Desko also mentioned Hiltz’s impact when it comes to a two-man game with Stephen Rehfuss. The redshirt also had himself a masterful performance as one of three Syracuse players with a hat trick joining Hiltz and Tucker Dordevic.
Syracuse welcomes Hofstra into the Carrier Dome on Saturday, March 20th. However, things are uncertain after the Pride paused all team activities due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program.
Coach Desko touched on the possibility of a new opponent.
“We’re gonna talk about it as a staff. We don’t really want to have two weeks off before our next opponent,” said Desko. “We will [talk about it] if that’s the case.”
As of now, SU and Hofstra are set to square off at 12 p.m. Coverage on WAER begins at 11:30 with Countdown to Face-off.
