Syracuse women’s lacrosse defeats Temple 22-7 behind nine different goal scorers and career-highs from Kate Mashewske and Emma Tyrrell. WAER’s Lauren Helmbrecht explains how draw control helped the Orange notch another victory.

Her fifth-ranked Orange squad scored early and often, gaining a 6-1 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter. Behind goals from Belle Mastropietro and Riley McGowan, Temple fought back to be down by four goals before junior Emma Tyrrell assisted and scored goals within 10 seconds at the 11:11 mark of the second quarter to put Syracuse up 10-4. Tyrrell had a hand in four of Syracuse’s first five goals.

March 26th was an exciting day for fans of the Syracuse Orange. The men’s lacrosse team upset tenth-ranked Duke in the Carrier Dome, Felisha Legette-Jack was announced as the new head coach for the Syracuse women’s basketball team, and the women’s lacrosse team added some new names to its record book.

“Overall it was just a great day for Syracuse Athletics. And specifically, I’m really proud of our girls for a great team win over Temple,” said Coach Kayla Treanor.

Junior Emma Tyrrell had a career-high eight points in the win against Temple.

Emma Tyrrell had five goals and added three assists for eight total points in the game, a career-high. She and her sister, senior Meaghan Tyrrell, scored ten of the team's 22 goals.

“When Emma is on, she’s impossible to stop. She’s a phenomenal athlete and really has a great lacrosse IQ as well. Today, she was ready to play right away,” said Kayla Treanor.

Another player that hit the ground running was junior Kate Mashewske. Thanks in part to her performance, Syracuse dominated the draw control 23-10. Mashewske recorded a career-high 14 draw controls, which ties for third-most in a single game for the Orange. The team was just one more draw control win away from tying the record of most draw controls won in a single game at 24, set back in 2007 against Cornell.

After the game, Emma Tyrrell was excited by Mashewske’s performance.

“She was in a really good flow today. It was awesome to play with her because I knew exactly what she was doing the whole. And we had such great communication, especially when we were pushing transitions. It was just an awesome time.” Emma Tyrrell said.

The Orange had nine players score against Temple and the Owls gave up the most goals in a game since 2003. Next up, Syracuse faces seventh-ranked Loyola in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, March 29. The Orange are undefeated at home so far this season and 8-2 overall, while the Greyhounds of Loyola come in unbeaten on the year.
