The Onondaga County Justice Center stands several stories tall on a corner in downtown Syracuse.

An Onondaga County prisoner died by suicide over the weekend.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said the death took place at the Justice Center in downtown Syracuse.

The sheriff's office reported that around 11 a.m. on Saturday a man was discovered unconscious in his cell. Deputies attempted to revive him but were unable.

After investigating, the sheriff's office has referred the case to the New York State Attorney General's Office.

The Justice Center is supposed to grow in population under a proposal to close the Jamesville facility and move its inmates downtown.

The county legislature approved the move and the county executive submitted a proposal to a state committee, but the county sheriff has voiced his opposition to the idea.
