Despite rising tensions in the ongoing war in Iran, the price of gas in Central New York is holding steady at $4.17 per gallon of regular, according to AAA. In Syracuse proper, the price is a cent lower, but in both Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse, the price has held firm through last week.
However, the past week’s stability is a departure from a month of declining prices from a June high of $4.45. Due largely to tentative cease-fire negotiations between the U.S. and Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, prices have been coming down steadily.
But following renewed hostilities this week and a fresh blockade in the vital waterway, prices are expected to rise until negotiations can resume, and a new ceasefire can be brokered.
Onondaga County prices remain 10 cents a gallon higher than the state average of $4.07. While Syracuse’s prices have leveled out, New York as a whole has seen a slight uptick in prices from an average of $4.05 last week.
To conserve fuel, AAA recommends driving at the speed limit at a steady pace, avoiding heavy acceleration, and reducing the number of trips.
