NYCLU appeals for release of terminally ill inmate

A terminally ill inmate in western New York remains in prison two years after being granted parole. The New York Civil Liberties Union filed an appeal January 17, 2025, on behalf of 67-year-old Steve Coleman, alleging he is being held unlawfully and without adequate medical care.

Coleman, diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease and cancer in 2020, was approved for parole in 2021 under the condition that the Department of Corrections and Community Services (DOCCS) place him in a nursing home offering dialysis.

The NYCLU argues DOCCS is violating Coleman’s Constitutional rights by failing to release him and provide necessary treatment. Coleman remains detained in a facility east of Buffalo.
