Summer travel surge expected in Central New York, safety concerns rise

Analysts predict a record number of drivers will hit the road this summer in Central New York and across the country.

AAA says more than 80% of New York residents have plans to travel, thanks in part to lower gas prices. Another factor, according to Moving.com, is economic uncertainty prompting more people to relocate during the summer months.

But with more people camping and moving, unsecured loads are becoming a growing safety concern. The latest report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows more than 98,000 drivers were involved in crashes on U.S. highways due to lost loads — most caused by objects falling from passenger vehicles.
