Data and facts on US immigration policy don't always line up with rhetoric and understanding

Newhouse Impact: Showcasing the research and creative activity of the faculty and students at the Newhouse School
Newhouse School

The fear and politics around immigration policy often skew what people know, or even the information they seek about the topic. New policies are affecting millions of people, while also having impacts on businesses, housing and cost of goods and services. The issue was a key pillar in President Trump's election and remains an important part of his agenda, even as some have become disenchanted withe the tactics to carry it out.

On this episode of Newhouse Impact, Dr. Austin Kocher, a Research Assistant Professor at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, discusses his research into the realities of immigration, deportation, detention, and the politics that shape these issues. Dr. Kocher’s work provides a data-driven approach to understanding the human consequences of policy decisions, helping us navigate the complexities of immigration reform at a time when public discourse is highly polarized.
