The American Dream: Stories of the diverse, shifting nature of people's North Star

Newhouse Impact: Showcasing the research and creative activity of the faculty and students at the Newhouse School
Newhouse School

Most of us have heard of the American Dream. Maybe you think of an idyllic lifestyle, a beautiful home and family, career or creative success. But dig deep in the United States and all our diversity, and you might find many other notions.

On this episode of Newhouse Impact, Associate Professor of Communications Dr. Charisse L'Pree describes her project of having students seek out stories about the American Dream. They crossed any identity line imaginable, interviewing people of different ethnicities, gender identities, socio-economic status, generational and other factors. They found myriad descriptions, often changing, and sometimes unattainable.

Newhouse Impact is a collaboration between WAER and the Newhouse School of Public Communications with help from the office of Dr. Regina Lutrell. Research and guest scheduling help from Chris Fiegel.
Music in this episode is 'White Birds' by Crowander from Free Music Archive.
