Extended Reality and its wide-ranging human-computer interactions

Newhouse Impact: Showcasing the research and creative activity of the faculty and students at the Newhouse School
Newhouse School

You might be familiar with VR, virtual reality. Well now you can add to your vocabulary XR, Extended reality. It encompasses VR, along with augmented reality and mixed reality, and is really the next frontier of computer-human interaction. These immersive and innovative ways of creating experiences and content that take you places virtually or add to your existing environment are increasingly being used for entertainment, but also education, training and many other functions.

On this episode of Newhouse Impact, Professor Jason Webb explains how XR technologies can virtually take you diving on a reef, touring a museum or playing immersive games. But they're also used to create realistic training for doctors, for tradespeople, and with AI interactions, even communicating with people for grief or other counseling.

Background research and guest scheduling by Chris Fiegle and Maggie DiPatri. The Newhouse Impact theme music was created by Kat Kollins.
