The Onondaga Health Department is seeing spikes in overdoses from people using a horse tranquilizer called Xylazine.

The Onondaga County Department of Health has reported an overdose spike alert for opioids after fake pills laced with fentanyl were sold to unsuspecting customers.

New York's U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer touted his plan to increase federal funding for drug-related problems at Helio Health in Syracuse.

The funding comes as County Executive Ryan McMahon released the latest opioid data, and the numbers are sobering. The county recorded 186 overdose fatalities last year, the highest ever in Onondaga County. That’s up from 156 in 2020.

Back in the 1980s, the center received an estimated 1,400 calls a year. Now it answers about 50,000.

A coalition of Syracuse-area groups marked the occasion of Overdose Awareness Day Tuesday by calling on Governor Hochul to sign a package of bills aimed at preventing overdoses. They include medication-assisted treatment in jails and prisons and decriminalizing syringes.
