WITHOUT A WHISPER - KONNON:KWE uncovers the hidden history of the profound influence Indigenous women had on the beginnings of the women’s rights movement in the United States.
Before the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in 1848, European colonial women lacked even the most basic rights, while Haudenosaunee women had a potent political and spiritual voice and authority in all aspects of their lives. The contact that the early suffragists had with Haudenosaunee women in New York state shaped their thinking and had a vital impact on their struggle for equality that is taken for granted today. The film follows Mohawk Bear Clan Mother Louise Herne and Professor Sally Roesch Wagner as they seek to correct the historical narrative about the origins of women’s rights in the United States.

An elegant drama from an American master.
“I've always had the feeling, if I just had the chance, I could set the whole world on fire.” As a small Kansas town prepares for the annual Labor Day picnic, handsome young drifter Hal stirs up long dormant feelings amongst a group of repressed women, including Madge, a beauty queen who yearns for another life whenever she hears the train whistle blow. Disappointments, resentments, and rivalries simmer with the late summer swelter in William Inge’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic about the power of attraction and the perils of unfulfilled desire.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Lorenzo State Historic Site will host speaker Danielle Funiciello for her presentation, “Angelica Schuyler Church: Women’s Shifting Power During the American Revolution.” Funiciello will look through the lens of “Schuyler Sister” Angelica Schuyler Church’s life to examine the way that women’s relationship to power changes over the course of the American Revolution and argues that Angelica was not an outlier in the way that she blurred the lines between the public and private sphere. Rather, women like Angelica persist in the historical records, while many women’s lives were wiped out by the archival collecting process of the early-19th-Century and beyond. Danielle Funiciello is the Interpretive Programs Assistant at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego, New York, holds her MA in Public History from University at Albany SUNY and is currently a PhD Candidate in History at the same institution.
